What Is a Roadworthy Certificate?

In Queensland, a roadworthy certificate – officially called a Safety Certificate – is the legal document confirming your vehicle meets the state’s minimum safety standards.

Most Queenslanders know it as a “roadworthy” or “RWC,” but the official term used by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is a Safety Certificate. Both names refer to exactly the same document – issued under the same process, by the same type of accredited provider, carrying the same legal weight.

A Safety Certificate is issued by a Queensland Government-approved Approved Inspection Station (AIS) after a vehicle passes a minimum safety standard inspection. It confirms that on the day of inspection, the vehicle’s safety-critical components met the standards required for legal road use in Queensland.

It’s important to understand that a roadworthy certificate is not a full mechanical inspection – it confirms safety compliance, not mechanical perfection. If you’re buying a used vehicle, a safety certificate is the seller’s legal obligation, but we recommend arranging a separate pre-purchase mechanical inspection for your own peace of mind.

Roadworthy vs Safety Certificate - Is There a Difference?

No. In Queensland, “roadworthy certificate,” “safety certificate,” and “RWC” are all the same document. Other Australian states use different names — NSW uses a “pink slip,” Victoria has its own format — but none are valid for Queensland transactions. Only a Queensland-issued Safety Certificate from an accredited AIS is accepted here.
